BT Sports Rebrands As TNT Sports
TNT Sports launched in the UK and Republic of Ireland yesterday, replacing BT Sports and promising to become the ultimate home for sports fans. This follows last year’s announcement that the BT Sport group would be purchased by multinational media giant Warner Bros Discovery, after reaching an agreement to pursue a joint venture and merge portfolios.
Warner Bros Discovery already owns Eurosport (who are the rightsholder in the UK and Ireland for the Paris 2024 Olympics), and in time Eurosport and BT Sport are set to be brought together under the TNT Sports branding. The merger will allow sports fans to watch many of the biggest global sporting events, like the Olympics, Tennis Grand Slams, Premier League Football and Rugby under one channel banner.
The new service features a new and contemporary brand and a new line up of talent including a female-fronted football presentation team with Laura Woods, Lynsey Hipgrave, Jules Breach and Reshmin Chowdhury.
For those who use the BT Sport app to watch their content, Discovery+ will now be the new streaming home of the channel in the UK.
TNT Sports is already a familiar brand to many countries around the world, particularly those in Latin America, and according to the managing director at Warner Brothers Discovery Sports, Europe is “already synonymous with premium live sports… and is a further sign of the global scale and expertise that WBD brings to the partnership with BT.” This new merger is set to rival Sky’s strong grasp over the UK sports market and will hopefully foster a more competitive and diverse market.
