Big Brother is Back!
Big Brother will be returning to our screens on Sunday after a five-year hiatus. In its prime Big Brother regularly pulled in 5 million+ views. It initially ran on Channel 4 between 2000-2010, before moving over to Channel 5 until 2018, where it was cancelled after ratings dipped. This new revival will be shown on ITV2 and the streaming platform ITVX and hosted by AJ Odudu and Will Best. According to ITV the basic premise of the show will remain the same and will contain all “the familiar format points” including live evictions and a cash prize for the winner, but with a “contemporary new look” and “some additional twists that speak to today’s audience.”
The return of Big Brother to our TV screens is set to drum in viewership, especially amongst the hard-to-reach 16-34s, with Reality TV being a large part of their TV viewing. One of the most attractive aspects of this new revised Big Brother is that it should have the ability to appeal to a diverse audience, from a new younger audience of Gen Zs who will most likely discover it through clips across social media to an older audience who grew up with the original series.
Full details on this reboot still remain vague, although what is clear is ITV’s strategy to capture younger audiences and further expand their position in both the streaming and linear landscape.
